Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival '10 opened with the 'Ram Vijaya' by the Sattriya Monks from Assam.

Sattriya, from the North Eastern state of Assam, is located in a matrix of an intersecting system of belief, ritual and faith. Specifically, it emerges from a five hundred years old comprehensive theatre tradition nurtured in the Vaishnav Monasteries of Assam, called Sattras that propagate the Neo Vaishnav faith.

Sattriya has been preserved and practiced as a part of daily and ceremonial rituals in the Sattras and even outside. The performing arts that are associated with the Sattras were visualised as means of propagating the Mahapurushiya Dharama by the consecrated monks. Thus it is a living tradition and does not need to be re-invented unlike many of the neo-classical styles. However, like any art anywhere in the world, it is evolving in response to new circumstances, audiences and times.
