"An American song needless to say?" Come on. Bowie can't be that naive. Or perhaps he can. This "American" song put a shitload of cash into his British bank account. Over time the Brits really have been showing their true intellectual colors. Foooool.

@fanofprotopic my guess (could be wrong, but don't think so), is that Lennon's contribution was primarily to the concept/lyrics. And that the funkyness was also a result of the musicians that David recorded with at the time, including Carlos Alomar on guitar.
