For ten months a year, these native children — some taken from their homes — start each day with a religious service before heading to classes. A CBC Television crew visits the school to salute Education Week — and here, the education is all about how to integrate into mainstream Canadian society."

@MyHealingSoul Excuse me? That is an extremely ignorant comment. The canadian educational system is no worse than the american one. Look at the Tea Party, Sarah Palin and George Bush, these are prime examples of incompetence. The way the Canadian government (emphasis on GOVERNMENT) treated Aboriginals cant have been worse than how Americans treated the blacks they imported from Africa. Im not defending the actions of my country at all but every country at some point is guilty of crimes like this

i'm an native woman.. i'm also a legal assistant. At this moment, i am in a northern community in Quebec and we are completing IAP Claims for Residential School survivors. I have never been so disgusted with the church. I hope the priests and nuns are rotting in hell for what they did to these people.

Absolutely disgusting to depict the residential schools as anything other then the corrupt, legal torture chambers they were. No apology from the government could ever change the history and the snowball effect that the damage caused within has inflicted upon generation after generation of our Native people!

all discussions aside, it is clearly evident that things were not happy and for the good like depicted in this short strip. No matter how anyone else wants to see this, the only thing that can be agreed is that those who made this film back in the 50's were just as to blame for these horrible events as those priests, nuns and politicians of that time. They down right LIED to voting communities at that time and told them it was something to "help" indigenous people to "integrate." .. LIES..

My Father and his brothers and sisters were sent to a residental school in 1949 after my grandmother died giving birth, my grandfather couldnt look after them and work the farm as well so this is what happened. The only thing different about his story is that He and his family were caucasian, my father was made to speak english in that place too, not a language native to him.

I have heard time and again of the horrible things that went on in this place and see the pain my dad still harbours.

The difference is that our Aboriginal people get pushed aside, their race is not considered anything, and the race and culture sits in limbo. Any other genocide that has happened. those races/cultures get promoted, and reconized. They get their own resources and even universities (we have a Jewish school system devoted to jewish people), but what do the Aboriginal get, nothing.. Next time ask yourself this... Would you want ot live on a reserve?, if they have it so great, trade with them
