Footage of the 2007 World Cup Team Hunter Challenge in Las Vegas. This was the rematch. The footage in this vid is only of the Europeans.
Teams were as follows:
USA: John French, Peter Pletcher, Scott Stewart, Louise Serio
Europe: Rodrigo Pessoa, Christian Ahlmann, Marcus Ehning, and Michael Whitaker.

We destroyed the Europeans, but i was still cheering for them of course. haha.

  • please excuse my ignorance (i live in europe,no hunter classes here) but what exactly is a hunter class? isn't it like regular showjumping?

  • no. its not timed, and you're judged on how..."nice" you look.

thats why its kind of a joke to the europeans.

  • wow, looked like quite the competition! well done.....just out of curiusity, are some of the riders also show jumpers? cause some of them ride like it....a lot of them do, actually. great vid!

  • all the riders in the video are show jumpers. the riders are marchus ehning, michael whitaker, christian ahlman, and pessoa. it was a joke competition too haha

  • I have to admit, it was amusing to see Whitaker go off course and decide to drop the reins and ride without hands.

  • I love it how people think Hunter is so easy and then to see these Grand Prix riders struggling and looking so stiff throught the round. LOL

  • @sweetberry07 thank you so much for pointing that out. Most people think it's easy when it takes years of preparation.

It's not judged on "how nice you look". It's judged on the horses quality of movement, form over fences, and fluidity. Getting your distances right, seemlessly adjusting the horses stride, and correct leads matter. Yes Turnout is important, but turnout should be important (and typically is) no matter what genre you show in. Just because it looks effortless when done properly doesn't mean that it is.

  • Just shows you can't send out a jumper to do a hunters job and also the other way around. Actually a hunter could probably do a hunters job but they wouldn't go fast enough to win. And with jumper could do hunters they just would need to figure out all the secrets to winning. And honestly I don't get how hunters could be a joke to the europeans. Dressage is based on how a horse moves and technically hunters is dressage over fences.

  • i was there

    it was so epic! haha

  • Unless your daddy buys you a $100 grand horse ^.^

Ugh, I used to do Hunters, but I got out of it because the circuits around me [Pebble, Woodside..] were all snobby rich girls who couldn't ride with their super expensive horses. They won, too.

But, hunters is gorgeous, and its like comparing apples to oranges. Done right, its amazing. Done wrong.. *shudder* Laying on the neck, unnecessary "gadgets", flopping around...

  • This is totally illustrating the difference between SJ and Hunters!

  • omg i remember watching this, richard spooner can not do eq for the life of him! funniest day of the week, they are all great riders though (:

  • Those horses move wonderfully xD

  • Yes you need to have good EQ, but not EXTREAMELY good. Cause I dont have extremely good EQ and I still get blue ribbions. But it's accually not that different, just no optinum time.
