This game doesn't need any introduction. But anyway I will copy straight from the manual:
"You are Petton Everhail, High wizard of Thoria, the most powerful living wizard in the world and you've got a problem. The evil lich Grelminar (Nemesis?), undead for over 200 years, has imprisoned Nemesis (Grelminar?) of Kelquest. (Nemesis is troublesome, but he's the only accessible person that can walk the Wildways, the super-natural paths to other dimensions.) Even you, an archmage, cannot travel to the places that Nemesis can. And so you journey to retrieve his body, now frozen in magical amber but still alive, from Grelminar's Keep on the dark island off the coast of Garacy. ..."
You're out to save Grelminar . I'm really unsure about the story but everyone who just enjoys a little gaming and is interested in its history in general should have played at least some minutes of the Catacombs 3D. It's great and you'll get immersed quickly into the search for Grelminar. You won't mind the lack in high-res graphics, you won't mind the 8-second sound loop, you won't mind the short length of the game. While the game is pretty easy and the dungeons are quite simple (nothing compared to Wizardy ..) you will enjoy exploring and collecting the scrolls which wil give you hints to think about while blasting all kinds of dungeon scum.
In a game that old there are naturally flaws - you can get stuck into walls while going along them. This is especially annoying when you want to run away from enemies. You have only one weapon and this one is very weak. No automap. No strafing.
But anyway, I highly recommend you to play it! And this also goes for the whole following Catacomb Fantasy Trilogy! Don't miss this.
The evil wizard here is actually called Nemesis and not Grelminar, the names were switched in the later games. Thanks to TheSeriousCacodemon for the correction.

Hahaha, this old game. It's incredibly slow-paced.
