Sometime in the future, it became standard practice to install adrenal stimuliators into the brains of people who had undergone some major form of surgery. This insured that, in the case of a near death experience, victims would be kept alive just a little bit longer to reach that medical attention they needed.

This practice was dropped sometime later when it occurred to those doctors that this was a terrible idea, and had horrible side effects if the victim, was say, sitting in a chair.
