The majority of western atheists (excluding marxist leninists) believe in the principals of religious freedom and the rights of man, Most don't seek to convert anybody and keep to themselves.

"New atheism" aka proselytizing atheism is a new recent phenomenom , It comes from the sudden surge of religious extremism primarily by Muslims , Also christianism the christian political movements in the U.S and abroad which negatively effect unbelievers.

That's a fairly defeatist perspective. If everyone lived by that mantra we probably wouldn't exist. The progress made by the human race can hardly be invalidated by what you said.

In fact, it's only in the long run that progress matters as we better our understanding of the world around us.

For instance I'd like to believe that you and I have a more rounded understanding of the world than the average man 500 years ago, so progress definitely matters. Know what I mean?

Well, we won't exist some day. That's the whole point. You can make as much progress as you want until that happens, but of course it's not required.

It's nice to have better understanding and all, but that also isn't required. One day we'll be extinct, and animals with much less understanding than us will be living on our earth. It's defeatist, but it's not any less of a reality. Nothing lasts forever. Everything is temporary. All is vanity. Watch "The Future Is Wild."
