Do NOT let the police search you!!

Know your rights! You have every right to refuse a search if the police have to ask your permission. If the police ignore your refusal and still search you without a warrant, then any evidence they find against you will be inadmissible in court due to unlawful search and seizure.

If you are pulled over and refuse search, can they then detain you for not complying? What do you do, just drive off???

@badgirlpinto If they've pulled you over for speeding, then they can write you a ticket. They can not detain you or force you to accept a search without probable cause (such as a beer can in the car or a joint in the ashtray). If they can't tell you why they want to search your car, then they can not arrest you for noncompliance.

I think I know why you all have such negative opinions about the police! You're all smart asses or criminals, and have probably had an unpleasant encounter with the law. You will always be at the bottom of the social chain, because you are all losers. So why not place the blame elsewhere? At least you'll feel better about yourself momentarily. Kudos to you!

@Kas4mir Actually, my father is a cop. I don't have any issues with the police as some of them are very devoted to protecting our rights. In fact, that's why there are programs like L.E.A.P (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) out there! Some officers see the hypocrisy of the drug laws & fight for the rights of the citizens they vowed to protect.

However, there are MANY officers who aren't quite so noble & who use their power to trample the rights of others. It's those police that people hate.

However, people who dislike the police are not criminals. They are human beings & are more than entitled to voice that dissatisfaction.

The answer needs to be " I don't consent to searchs". Most of us can remember that simple phrase in a moment of pressure. The police are super trained...we are the fish in the barrel...eazy pickins. I love 48 hours and cops where the uninformed citizen always confesses and /or gives up rights. Of course the police train us at an early age that "police are good" and to submit. What they don't teach children is their rights under the contitution.....

@vmcebollero Really? As far as I know, Canadians can refuse a search too. Police do not have any ability to search without a warrant or permission.

I agree. Our rights get stepped on all the time and citizens need to start caring!

@GrowTheTruth Thanks ... I saw a presentation once regarding Canadian law and they said that if you produce ID you're in effect submitting to Police authority. I tend to agree with you, that at least here in the USA, we're bound by at least the Patriot Act to surrender our ID. It's sad to see our rights tossed out without so much as a whimper from the citizenry.

@vmcebollero I believe you do have to give your license and registration. Your identity is not protected under the search laws.
