(By Roland Keller) STS 135 / STS 133 : denuded, dismantled and shapeless, Discovery living its last hours in Cape Canaveral
Emotions, emotions. I don't want to be killjoys, but when you enter in the famous VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) and you see the shuttle Discovery in disassembly, it will tie a little guts. Oh, I know that everything at the end. Bahhhh, yet ! To see so this brooch of space technology stripped of its engines and some of its avionics, is puzzling. « Don't worry, we will provide the engines. They were removed just send them to clean up in NASA Center New Mexico », reassures us an employee of the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The shuttle Discovery (last flight, STS 133, February 24 to March 9 2011) is standing there in an annex of the main hall where the atmosphere is already in a quasi-museum : effigies and banners recall the memories of the old flights. Brownish facilities (stairs, crane, giant gaping shelves) remind the last missions . This building built in 1965 has been refreshed on the outside, but not so much inside. However, his imposing figure still leaves us dreamers. In three days, Atlantis should hopefully land nearby on the track the KSC and the same fate dismantling to end his days at the museum on KSC Visitor Center. Discovery will be sent to the museum in Washington. It increases my spleen.
Big waste for vehicle only third through its life America is throwing away the space race
