Theism and deism are religious attitudes that have not been historically challenged nearly as much as the opposite: disbelief. In order to search out the opinions of the laity of the past, one must dig deep. Jonanthan Miller, an atheist himself, searches for this history and gives us a concise and well balanced (reason vs unreason that is) opinion on the subject. You'll notice that most atheist historical figures, Thomas Pain especially, have been given a less distinct place in history compared to their believing counterparts. Also notice the great dedication many atheists have to their stance on faith. This is something I think believers don't appreciate. They site the great faith of their martyrs and claim that this is a unique trait which substantiates claims. What about martyrs who are still alive. There are people who have enough courage to follow the truth and many more within the faith who don't have this same will to honesty. I hope we gain that honesty.

Atheist is a design word, atheism is a religious term and we ought to stop using it if we want our independence from religion and call ourselves something else. We have kept our minds natural so why allow the clergy to name us? we can come up with a name that represents us.
Suggestions? I think as long as the majority of people are theist, you need a word that denotes a position not held by the majority. "Theist", after all, is really only a term atheists use (that I've seen). If atheism becomes the norm, the term will likely be disappear into assumption and "theist" will, at that point, be the only term needed on a day to day basis. Just my opinion. But boy do I hope the world stops this destructive delusion soon!
I don't mean to offend, but the only thing that connect the two of us is our common lack of belief. I don't need any representation, I don't need any other connections, besides those I choose for myself. Saying you want something that "represents" us, is, in my eyes, very counter-productive, and only enforces the theist's misconceptions.
