You can make charcoal by heating a barrel full of dry wood. If you let the gasses out beneath the barrel you get very much extra heat. Takes 1.5h. Don't open the barrel lid until next day, coal must cool down, if not it might ignite.

  • if the hole for the gases has a flame coming out of it for a little while while your making the charcoal is it ruined, even only if there is a flame for a short amount of time?

  • You don't have to burn the flammable gas. You _could_ have an exhaust long enough to let the gasses out of the barrel without burning it. But the point is that the gasses contribute to the heating. Also, the gasses need oxygen to burn and hence the flames will not reach into the barrel.

  • I do agree with repareren1: Do not open the barrel immediately, wait for it to cool down (next day). Freshly maid charcoal will absorb oxygen and this process releases energy and the charcoal may self ignite. The first time I made charcoal I lacked this knowledge and opened the barrel just a few hours after the fire had burnt out. Sure enough, when I returned later I only found ashes! Therefore, wait until next day before you open the barrel.

  • this is a really good idea and it works. post a proper vid and don't take any notice of idiots

  • DO NOT PUT WATER IN,

the whole point of making charcoal is to get the water out of the wood. so just put non treated wood into a can and cook it indirectly.

  • so you just take wood from your backyard, and you do what? you put water in the barrel and boil the wood? or you just put the wood at liek 300 degrees? post a tutorial
