Samsung tells me that enough of us complain, the item might go into recall status -- which means they fix it
THIS IS A HINT, FOLKS -- CALL SAMSUNG!

mine just started flickering a couple days ago... thanks very much for the video! I will take mine apart this week... hopefully it's the same problem because this should be a pretty easy fix (I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron)... god bless the internet.

I'm an amateur at soldering and haven't done it since high school years and years ago. I'm going to have to relearn it or something because I'm unemployed and can't afford a new monitor or professional repairs. I'm disappointed with Samsung and will probably never but a product from them again. They have ignored my requests for repair via e-mail and twitter.

@MrX600531 Evidently, about the time this monitor was made, a LOT of bad capacitors came out of china, and affected lots of consumer electronics made at the time. It's not really samsung's fault. The monitor's out of warranty, though I did read several stories about people getting them fixed for free back when the monitor was still in the warranty period.
