WENT TO # 1 IN 1958. LYRICS:
[Intro:]
Throughout history
There've been many songs written about the eternal triangle
This next one tells the story of a Mr Grayson, a beautiful woman
And a condemned man named Tom Dooley...
When the sun rises tomorrow, Tom Dooley... must hang...
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
I met her on the mountain
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain
Stabbed her with my knife
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Hadn't a-been for Grayson
I'd a-been in Tennessee
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
This time tomorrow
Reckon where I'll be
Down in some lonesome valley
Hangin' from a white oak tree
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Poor boy, you're bound to die
Poor boy you're bound to die
Poor boy, you're bound to die...

Only ever heard the version by Lonnie Donegan Ron; also released in 1958 and got to No. 3 in the UK charts. Both versions are completely different so it's hard to say which is the best. I would say they were both good in their own way. Jim

The memories! 8 hour car drives to go camping in the Adirondacks with my family. Dad driving the old station wagon smoking his pipe and Kingston Trio cassette tapes being played the whole way. We wanted to jump out of the car before we even got over the GW Bridge but man I can really appreciate it now.

Often we hear anti-whites use the term "minorities" used to refer to Africans, Indians, ect
But In 1900 my people, white people, comprised 33% of world population, today we are at 9% and dropping like a rock. Not only are we a minority in the world but because of immigration & assimilation in EVERY white country and ONLY white countries our children are poised to be minorities IN OUR OWN COUNTRIES within a few decades.
This is genocide. This is evil and this must stop!

The true story of Tom Dula ( Tom Dooley) is very interesting , and not as all clear cut as the song makes out- he may have taken the rap to protect a former lover who killed Laura out of jealousy. swiki "tom Dula"

Wow..powerful stuff. Akin to the folk music of England years before? Either way, a great record. I understand this song has been placed in the US national music archives?

I thought this was just kind of a strange and morbid song, till I started to tell my wife about it, and she pointed out to me that it's based on a true story. See the wikipedia article on Tom Dula.
