Even grinding burrs or welding slag?

When purging large diameter nat. gas pipelines the purging procedure is critical, as any mixture of air/gas within 4-14% in new pipeline may be ignited even by debris ( stones, metal filings, etc) running inside the new pipes.

Hate to hear bout stuff like that.

your talking crap, you obviously don't have a scooby about the subject. It will take a few days to find out what happened. Natural gas wont ignite with out oxygen and a heat source. and how do they purge in the USA is it practice to use an inert gas to purge or straight to gas.

Probably came from a leak in one of the fuel pipes. Natural gas is largely shipped around the US through pipelines. This being a new plant they were probably starting to connect the fuel lines into one of them, and a valve leaked, got stuck, or was left open for a time. Gas accumulated inside the lines(and possibly the plant itself), and the efforts of the workers to purge the gas lines either ignited the gas charge itself, or failed to clear the gas out of them before something else did.
A terrible tragedy. Natural gas is dangerous stuff.
