The next in a weekly series of 10 minute topics teaching about various topics within Judaism. This week's topic is: Names of Hashem.
In Judaism, the name of G-d is more than a distinguishing title. It represents the Jewish conception of the divine nature, and of the relation of G-d to the Jewish people.1 To show the sacredness of the names of G-d, and as a means of showing respect and reverence for them, the soferim (scribes) of sacred texts took pause before copying them, and used terms of reverence so as to keep the true name of G-d concealed. The various names of G-d in Judaism represent G-d as He is known, as well as the divine aspects which are attributed to Him.
