I think it's easy to say things changed because of Sammy. IMO, the changes began on the 1984 album. EVH infused the keyboards, and poppier sounds. Sammy fit into that style seemlessly because he too adapted over the years. All you have to do is look at his morph from Montrose to "I can't drive 55".
For the record, I enjoy the Diamond Dave and Sammy eras equally. Different music. None better than the other.

I just watched the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Movie expecting it not to be as great as I thought it was when I was a kid, it was AMAZING!!!!

Van Halen became a different band when Sam took over. They went from being a bluesy, edgey, swagger-in-your-face macho, riff heavy hard rock band to a more melodic, synth/pop-driven, almost like a hard rock Journey-type band. That being said, I listen to these songs and I truly think they are brilliant. Maybe they should have called this Van Hagar legally. Sammy has better chops than Dave,but Dave's got a more appealing voice to me. And the new disc is heavy and awesome. Tattoo=ADKOT as jump=84.
