I had a set of 5 vinyl discs of him. This recording was among. It was interesting to compare this one and Oistrakh, they are so different!

@benyc217 i never could notice that julian sitkovetsky was underrated. he and the pianist alexander sofronitzky are idols from unnumerious young musicians - like myself. its true that oistrach and richter have been and are more famous. but julian and sascha played the same level in my opinion. his (julians) son dmitri is following the big tradition in his family. he is an outstanding musician as well.

Barinova recording of Sibelius violin concerto was in 1947 with A. Orlov conducting Moscow Radio Orchestra. Recording was available on Multisonic some years ago.

@AndreiKrakovsky Didn't know Barinova recorded it as well (or did she?). If she did, has her recording been reissued?

His recording of the Sibelius VC with Anosov conducting is a marvel matched only by Galina Barinova's performance. You must admit, we Russians own the violin!

Dmitri Sitkovetsky has objectively the best Prokofiew ever!
Can somebody post it over here for the good to the man and violin kind?
-
don't you think it's a more "lyrical" interpretation, compared to Ferras, who plays more aggressive (cf. Cadenza)?
I don't intend any grading...

Oh, I agree -- too bad he didn't record more of Bach.

Since you asked for reviews, I can say that I've always thought that this is one of the all-time great performances of this concerto, and it's a great shame that it's not known any better. I especially like the way Sitkovetsky plays the opening melody -- so powerful, yet at the same time delicate and mysterious. 10/10 for this performance.

Julian Sitkovetsky is probably one of the very underrated violinist in last century. His Bach is simply amazing.
Fabulous performance. Superior violinist who, for many people in the west, is relatively unknown. Yulian was a great Russian artist who got edged out in the 1955 Queen Eliz. Competition by an American - Berl Sinofsky - someone who arguably was not as talented as was Sitkovetsky. This rare recording is a treasure and a testament to his musicality and deep understanding of the violin. Love the guys rapid vibrato.
