True, decoders and all are nice, .....but I have taken trains out of the boxed sets and had very slow prototypical speed and operation without adding anything. After adding a bit of Pearl Drops Tooth Polish (especially on the smaller scales), I got even better performance, as brand new gears need to get broken in / worn a bit.

The SW moved alot smoother and prototypically more correct than the MP. Me personally I think electronics is not neccessary for prototypical slow speed operation if you have a good transmission drive set with a single quality motor such as a Pittman rather than the sloppier running direct worm gear to can motor shaft as most models are produced nowadays. The older atlas f9's,Red Caboose GP9's and Weavers earlier chain driven models ran alot slower and smoother without the help from decoders.

Great demo for prospective buyers. I guess its the opposite of a auto drag race - the slowest wins.
WSI doesn't have any Back EMF in their decoders resulting in less quality motor control. They dont have BEMF because of a Lawsuit from Mikes Whore House.... I mean Mikes Train House

Actually they do have back-emf, it's just not that great and they don't use it to produce a constant speed (which is apparently what MTH patent claims). QSI uses back-emf to get what they call RTC - regulated throttle control. It's supposed to smooth out short term irregularities but still slow down on grades or when consisted. Good idea, poor implementation.
