This stunning performance set Broadway on it's heel. To see a Black performer so serious so dramatic so soulful all roled into one was something no one had dared to witness before. Ethel Waters was the first African American woman to become a pop superstar and Broadway star of both musicals and drama. She is the real deal who opened all the doors on the stage and screen for serious talented Black Divas. She should be given more credit. Today she is mostly forgotten

@sammysaywhat49 sorry i was looking for the same video when i found this. I didnt know that show played on PBS. I have the dvd's of that documentary. if you want to find THAT its called "Broadway the American Musical" its a wonderful history of broadway in general but I never did find the live video so tell me if you do. Later

I made this video for a college course on "The History of the Musical." As soon as I heard this song it drew me in and I couldn't get the story out of my mind. This was for a final project, we had to pick a specific Broadway performer. I'm glad you found it, thanks!
