Russian composer Aram Khatchaturian, known best for his "Saber Dance," and the ballet "Spartacus," was influenced by both Russian and Armenian folk music. Born in 1903, he lived through both the Imperial Russia of the Romanovs and the Soviet Revolution. He joined the Communist Party in 1943, but made enemies and was condemned in 1948 by the Communists' Central Committee along with musical contemporaries Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev. He eventually regained his popularity and won four Stalin prizes over the years. He died in Moscow in 1978, just before his 75th birthday. Music is his exciting "Saber Dance."
