Hans Seyle:
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
GAS is a term used to describe the body's short-term and long-term reactions to stress. Originally described by scientist, Hans Selye, the general adaptation syndrome represents a three-stage reaction to stress. Selye explained his choice of terminology as follows: "I call this syndrome general because it is produced only by agents which have a general effect upon large portions of the body. I call it adaptive because it stimulates defense.... I call it a syndrome because its individual manifestations are coordinated and even partly dependent upon each other."
Selye showed the interrelations of the nervous system and the endocrine system. He outlined the three distinctive stages in the syndromes evolution; the alarm reaction (AR), the stage of resistance (SR), and the stage of exhaustion (SE).
The sequence of hormonal events that occur throughout the HPA Axis, proves that the hypothalamus' primary function is to link the nervous system and endocrine system via the pituitary gland.
The Alarm Reaction Stage

The alarm reaction is the normal physiological response to stress outlined in the Hormonal Flow of the HPA Axis. The sympathetic nervous system responds to a perceived stressor with an increased output of catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline). It is the effects of the glucocorticoids upon a stress response that influence the body into a series of responses:
Glucose mobilization
Anabolic processes are halted
Digestion is shut down
Reproductive function is inhibited
Immunity is suppressed
Pain perception is altered
Enhanced cognitive and sensory skills

Resistance/Compensation Stage

If stress persists, the negative feedback of the H-P-A axis will continue to repeat with little to no recovery. Elevated cortisol typically signals the H-P-A Axis system to stop the production of ACTH. Over time and when stress is persistent, chronically elevated cortisol levels desensitize the H-P system and cortisol levels remain elevated.

As cortisol levels continue to stay elevated, an imbalance is created in the ratio of cortisol to DHEA (increased cortisol to DHEA) due to the failure of the adrenal cortex to produce DHEA upon ACTH stimulation.

* The body normally goes through these first two stages many, many times. With the proper rest and recovery the body is able to regain homeostasis. It is when external stressors exceed internal reserve capacities that our resistance to stress diminishes.

Exhaustion/Fatigue Phase

This stage is the most hazardous. This is when stress levels go up and stay up. The body is no longer able to meet the demands being placed on it.

The adrenal cortex is so fatigued, that it is unable to respond to the ACTH stimulation. This leads to a dramatic decrease in the body's ability to manufacture and secrete ALL steroidal hormones. The priority now becomes to keep the heart pumping and the brain functioning.
Unidentified stress has detrimental effects on the human body and ultimately leads to the malfunction of our "fight or flight response". This leads to stress-related disorders:
Heart disease
High blood pressure
Immune system disorders
GI disorders
Endocrine dysfunction/imbalance

Migraine headaches
Insomnia
Sexual dysfunction

  • Oh and I was wondering what your opinion is on water fasting for healing claims - could you do a video on something like that? Do you think it would put the body too out of whack or do you think it has a place in healing? Thanks!

  • @ihrmc

I am not a fan of fasting for any reasons.

  • Will you be starting another Metabolic Blueprint program after the current course is over? I am very interested in it but it seems I have missed the first 4 classes. Thanks!

  • @ihrmc

Yes we will. Stay tuned by checking out my facebook page and our business page. As well sign up for the newslteter on our site (where it says "YES teach me how to use food as my supplement"...add your email in there). You will not get tons of emails, just updates on the next MB program. Most likley in April or May. i will be posting so people can get in if they want on the $497, but the price will be going up.

  • what about ketones compared to glucose? I keep hearing/reading that body's main source of fuel should be ketone and not glucose

  • @LOLMAN22

Not efficient for energy, produces A LOT of ammonia, etc and very hard on the liver and kidneys. A way to cheat the system for short term gains but end up with long term disease.

  • Nice video! Interesting info about body temperature. What are your thoughts on an obese individual keeping carbs under 50g a day but avoiding coloric deficiency by eating more protein and healthy fats a la Primal Blueprint? Do you believe that would create undue stress on the body as well?

  • Great video Josh! Thanks for all the info.

  • how come he says nothing about growth hormone and autophagy?

Just 2 days of fasting upregulates growth hormone 5 times over.

Actually fasting up to 7 days at a time is used for gaining muscle and losing fat provided it's done the right way without chronic stress. It also enforces energy efficiency which is what life is all about.

  • @ihrmc Please do not fast for long periods of time in attempt to promote healing. I would recommend eating more good food (no i dont mean celery sticks) and getting a lot of rest. Water in excess is not good, and as a matter of fact anything in excess is not good. Your body operates via electrical signals and the conductivity of this communication soley depends on electrolytes/mineral concentrations. Dilute these and you'll have some problems. Could be subtle like muscle spasms, or worse.

  • @joshrubineastwest but you don't believe it's detrimental do you? Not necessary, but it's not bad either correct?

  • okay how about losing 30 lb in 100 days concerning fast or slow

  • Amazing video with real and great facts :D thanks
