This is the first production ever made with an iPhone on the yet-to-be released Steadicam Smoothee from Tiffen.

The goal was to create a piece that almost anybody could achieve by stringing together shots of opportunity—sort of an instant documentary, the way family events and home movies typically come about.

I was intentionally looking for shots up, down, sideways, panning, trucking, dollying, orbiting, outdoors, indoors, in good light, in poor light, booming high, shooting low, walking into the scene, thrusting the rig into unexpected places, catching sound bites—in short, pushing this little lightweight rig every which way but loose.

The iPhone constraints are huge. Only one fixed focal length. Poor video quality—especially when hand-held and compression can't keep up with camera shake—slippery case, low dynamic image range, no exposure control and no internal stabilizing at all.

Now iPhone video no longer deserves to be dismissed as a joke. The image quality on my computer is far better than this YouTube version, but you can still see the attributes of the camera moves here.

  • Great video. How did you hold the steadycam when shooting up (:30) or down (:45) at your subject?

  • This video is absolutely beautiful and well done. Nice work with your iPhone video camera!
