Red Bull Rough Cuts - Ryan Sheckler (TOP 5)

Thanks to everyone who voted, it's a shame Sheckler didn't choose my edit to win, but I'm proud to have made it as far as I did.

This is my entry for the 2007 Red Bull Rough Cuts Competition. I did the editing, motion graphics, music remixing, and sound effects. I used Final Cut Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS, and Adobe After Effects 6.5.

Thanks. I probably worked overnight to do both in one night if I remember correctly. I was constantly jumping back and forth between Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Soundtrack Pro.

Well the effect at 0:23 was done by cloning out the objects in Photoshop, moving them to separate layers, importing the layers into After Effects and animating them from in there. Andrew Kramer's "Virtual 3D Photos" tutorial covers the basics of this technique, but moves the layers in Z space giving them a 3D feel. I did not need to do this, but it is a great addition to this effect known as "2.5-D." You can find that tutorial on Video Copilot.
