Sri Lankan Civilians Caught Between Worsening Military Tamil Rebel Clashes

The United Nations estimates that 215,000 Tamil civilians are trapped in northern Sri Lanka as intense fighting continues between the Sri Lankan military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. "Democracy Now" speak to Nirmala Rajasingham, founder of Sri Lanka Democracy Forum. In the early 1980s she was an active supporter of the LTTE and was the first woman to be arrested under Sri Lankas Prevention of Terrorism Act. She later left the LTTE over their serious human rights abuses.

The Tigers are screaming for a cease-fire. Every ceasefire that occurred in the past 25 years was used as an opportunity to re-arm and re-fit, before the Tigers ended it with a new offensive. The Sri Lankan government can be forgiven for preferring surrender to a cease-fire. Wars are terrible things, and it is best that they be ended not be prolonged. The Sri Lankan Civil War, after over 70,000 dead and 25 years of ruin and expense, is finally coming to an end. Let it end.

If you have watched & listened to this video clip carefully, you could have realised that Nirmala was critical about LTTE, who murdered her sister, when she was trying to highlight the LTTEs human rights abuses. I could not see in any of your comments here that you have criticised LTTE for the current humanitarian crises; is it because you only read Tamilnet, who are LTTEs propaganda machine?

A slave camp consisting male and female members 'chosen' from the fleeing civilians by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is reportedly setup in the abandoned Ki'lnochchi hospital building, reported TamilNet correspondent in Vanni, citing unverified information reaching Mullaiththeevu from males who escaped from the camp. According to the sources, men are kept at the downstairs for forced labour and women kept in the upstairs for abuse and tuture by the SLA soldiers who are on temporary leave.
