You do need to bring the deer sprinkler in, or cover it up, in freezing weather. In freezing weather we put a plastic trash can over ours here in Texas, which lets ground heat keep it warm enough. The deer sprinkler scares them so badly that they stay away even when it's covered, maybe related to the fact that cold water is extra unpleasant to the deer.
