This Khutbah was delivered at the Islamic Center at NYU (www.icnyu.org) on Friday, March 4th, 2011 by Imam Khaild Latif.

Many of the discussions that exist around gender in the Muslim community, both in the United States and abroad, have not fruitful. In this khutbah, Imam Latif speaks about the need for Muslim women to empower themselves through knowledge and also discusses how Muslims on a whole have failed to treat their women with the dignity and respect that they deserve.

Mash'Allah, this is incredible. This khutbah should be heard everywhere, in every masjid, not only in the US but world-wide. For it is our women who teach the next generation and who make it possible for us to be who we are. They are as clothes to us and we should be the same to them.

Brother Khalid, some men in our community are plainly ABUSIVE and stuck on CONTROL AND POWER ISSUES OVER WOMEN, it is NOT a theological/religious issue. Simply stating to women, "if you go out and learn it for yourself, no one can tell you otherwise" is a gross oversimplification of our community. Please refer women to social services and possibly the police if they tell you they are being abused.

Religion originated through women because that is who teaches society how to behave with morals, I wish men would give it back and stop using it to make money and form buildings.

Subhana'Allah! Wallahi I love this Imaam. He is my role model! Insha'Allah someday I'll meet him! I'm currently in the process of trying to help the youth in my community we truly need to come back to our beautiful Deen. Most of us see Islam just as a religion rather than a way of life. May Allah swt guide us. Keep us in your prayers, Insha'Allah.

Ha! Having a beard according to sunnah is rigid now? Il just say one thing Allah says in the quran follow the Prophet to success and when it says follow the Prophet it means his every aspect not picking and choosing what you feel is rigid, the beard is not a small thing in Islam, agreed islam is not in the beard but beard is in Islam and having a beard less than a fistful and not according to sunnah is sin. If calling me a troll non muslim makes you feel better about yourself then Im happy for u

"Woe to those who practice rigidity, woe to those who practice rigidity, woe to those who practice rigidity." -Prophet Muhammad. Nice try, though. I'm still not sure if you're actually Muslim or just a troll, but if it's the former, then I really hope you learn more about the faith before deciding to comment on it in the future. Peace.

Islam is rigid, and it doesn't matter what other people think about you as muslims, if you follow the Sunnah and the Prophet (PBUH). Learn about islam, see what Sahaba did, how they lived their lives, it's not about pleasing other people it's about pleasing Allah. Having a beard and look like the Prophet is very pleasing to Allah.

Stupidest comment I've seen on YouTube in quite some time. Congrats! You are the reason why people think we Muslims are rigid and unable to deal with. Get a grip, yaar.
