  • Is that an Akita Inu or an American Akita?

  • @dtownrebel1 - He is an Australian akita. I rescued him at age 3 so I don't know his breeding. There are a fair number of akitas here and I believe they are healthier than the US dogs. He has the constitution of a horse, although his digestive system cannot handle curry but anything else he is fine with. He is 13 now and other than being heartworm positive when we adopted him, he is never sick but slowing down as he ages.

  • @rooeytoo Australian Akita? I haven't heard of that breed. Idk about generalizing a population of dogs in an area on how healthy they are.

  • @Giodamus - I simply mean he is an akita born in Australia as opposed to one born in USA or Japan. The Japanese akita is almost considered a separate breed than the American bred ones.

Imh opinion akitas here are more hardy than those in USA, less skin problems, bloat etc. I am generalizing based on my experience, I don't know that there are any statistics to prove or disprove. Of course statistics can lean in any direction depending on who is footing the bill for compiling them.

  • @rooeytoo But see when you mention stuff like that its opinion. I disagree only to the point where you believe over there they have less of what you mentioned. Stuff like that is really how the dog is taken care of. So really it's the owner. And yes statistics can lean anyway and that also depends on the individual and their care for the dog. But if your also mentioning stuff like bugs and diseases passed through lets say mosquitos, then thats based on area cause not all bugs in all areas carry

  • @Giodamus - all I can tell you is that I was in the dog business, kennel, handling, training, etc. for about 25 years in the USA and now in the same line of work in Australia for the last 15, so based on my knowledge, akitas do not have nearly the genetic health problems in Australia that they do in USA. Probably because the breed is not nearly as popular here so there are not as many pet shop or back yard breeders trying to make a fast buck.

  • @rooeytoo - heartworm problems in the tropical areas are equivalent to the southern parts of the USA but not anywhere near the skin diseases, ear infections, hip and shoulder probs, as are in the breed in the US.

Of course this is my opinion but as for the care taken of the dog, that has little effect on genetic health problem.

  • what match highlights were they referring to in the background? are they talking about KP and the 2007 world cup?

  • @rooeytoo Then with that you have a point lol. Akitas none the less are beautiful dogs. Whether American or Inu.

  • @rooeytoo the same viruses and not all carry any viruses. But I get what you mean by where he was born lol. Just like us humans and our nationality.
