Gretzky missed 6 games in February. Add another 7 or 8 goals, even if those games werer in Long Island, Boston, Washington and Philadelphia. Doest matter, Gretzky scored goals as against any team and any goalie.
Jesus this team was ridiculous. It still amazes me how they were to get all those players on that team at the same time. All of them in their prime. They just made everyone else look silly.
Management. Glen Sather was among the top 3 managers in history along with Sam Pollock (Canadiens) and Bill Torrey (Islanders). Whoever was better is your pick. But definitely this was one heck of an offensive linenup. The Oilers scored almost 6 goals per game WITH Gretzky in the lineup that year. Note he only played 74 games, and his team scored 436 goals in those games. Put Gretzky in there for 80 games, and the goal output may have reached 460-470. Incredible, eh?
My mistake. The Oilers' record WITH Gretzky in the lineup in 83-84 was a sick 56-13-5 (117 pts) for a winning pct. of .791. Goals For was 427 Goals (5.77 / Game), Goals Against was 276 (3.73 / Game). If Gretzky had played the full 80 games, the team was on track for 462 goals, which would have been 102 goals more than the Nordiques (360 goals). The Oilers were only 1-5 without #99 and got outscored 38-19 in the process. He was the greatest MVP in pro sports.
I was young, but I remember that. They dominated a very good Islander Team in the Stanley Cup that were going for a fifth. I know their scoring output was sick.
No team ha gotten close since. They had three 50 goal-scorers on their team and defenseman with 40. That's just not fair. That will never happen again. The chances of them scoring a short-handed goal was like predicting rain in Seatlle. For insurance purposes, their goalie wasn't to shabby either.
36 shorthanded goals by the 83-84 Oilers. League average shorthanded goals=12 Second most shorthanded goals=Minnesota with 18 So the Oilers had twice as many shorties than the North Stars, I dont think any team has ever been that dominant on the PK. their pct was like 80.05%, a little better than the league average of 78.09%. Their power play was second best (about 25.0%). Ironically, the Oilers were second to the North Stars (26%) on the PP.
I agree. America is da nigger? Geez, youre right on the money LOL. The Oilers killed their opponents in those days they proved that over and over again for the next 7 years 1984-1990. Incredible how long they stayed on top. Even in 91 and 92, they made the conference finals with a weaker team but they were still kicking ass. Fuck you Islanders fans, you stink like fishsticks!

back when they played really damn good hockey, the place was as quiet as a library except whn they scored.
nowadays the game is total garbage, and the noise levels, deafening.
