" THE ORIGINAL APOSTATE
We can learn much about the mentality of apostates by looking at the very first apostate, Satan the Devil. Satan came not to appreciate the freedom he had under God's rule. He did not want to be under God's authority, dictating to him what was right and what was wrong. He wanted to be under his own authority and act as he pleased. However, to justify his choice, he had to prove that God was unjust and that the creation only followed God for what they could receive. Perhaps he felt that by proving this that he could avoid destruction. Thus Satan targeted the newly created mankind as the easiest means by which to prove these claims. But how would he do it?
Satan drew from his own experience as the means by which he would draw mankind into his rebellion, and just as he chose mankind as the easiest route, he chose the weakest link. So like a lion pouncing at a pack of herding animals, he targeted the youngest, least capable among the two, the woman, who was taught, not by God himself, but by the man. He had no confidence that he could get a mature creation taught by God to follow him, so targeted the one with least knowledge and experience. With his new found self image, free from God's laws, he conceived of deception and did with Eve exactly as he did for himself, deceiving her into thinking that she could choose for herself what was right and wrong without any consequences.
So Satan, pretending to be a snake, stated this admixture of lie and truth: "You all positively will not die. For God knows that in the very day of your all's eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened and you all are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad." (Genesis 3:4-5) Note that he is including Adam in his statement, not just Eve (Many translations leave out the plural aspect of "you", preventing a full understanding of the text). His goal was to mislead both through the concern of the one, making it look like it was something Adam would approve of, but by making the decision for both of them, Eve was overstepping her authority. By doing this, it would weaken the resolve of Adam to stand firm, as he would never have been deceived.
Later, in the days of Job, Satan said that God's servants only serve him for the things God provides and that when everything is taken away from them, though serving God faithfully, they will turn around and actually curse God. So when he can't lure the person away from God, he turns to making the person's life miserable so that they will abandon their faithful course.
That is why God's name, Jehovah, needs sanctifying, cleansing it from the filth Satan has lodged against him when he said God lied about them dying, that his motive was control, that God was no greater than they were, that God did not have the right to rule over them, that God was trying to keep them from good things, and that God's creation only serves him for what they can get out of it. Additionally, by making this argument he was in effect saying that they were following God simply because they did not know any better."
I mentioned earlier today that God is a praise junkie.

Satan was totally right in Job though, mainly because even though all of Job's physical stuff was taken away from him he still got hope from serving God and it made him feel good, so he was serving God for what he could get from it. I love how Jehovah's name needs to be sanctified yet it's not God's name.
