Jones gets another shot at former champ in machida at UFC 140 in December*
Canadian fight fans will be getting a Jon Jones title defence in Ultimate Fighting Championship's return to Toronto in December. It just won't be the grudge match of the year.
Light heavyweight champion Jones, who had been expected to face former friend and training partner Rashad Evans in his next title bout, will instead headline UFC 140 on Dec. 10 at Air Canada Centre against former champ Lyoto Machida.
The match was confirmed Thursday by UFC president Dana White.
"Fighting three champions in one year, what a great challenge. Feeling alive," Jones wrote on his Twitter account.
In addition to facing Machida, Jones this year has wins over ex-champs Mauricio Rua and Quinton Jackson.
Machida, who lost the title to Rua in May 2010, is coming off a knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129 in Toronto. The company's Ontario debut in April drew a record 55,724 fans paying a live gate at the Rogers Centre of more than $12 million.
Evans required surgery after suffering a dislocated right thumb in his win over Tito Ortiz at UFC 133. He had pins removed from his hand on Wednesday, at which point he was told by his doctor that he would need three weeks of rehabilitation before any training or exercise that would require the use of his right hand.
That would have given him barely five weeks to prepare for a bout at UFC 140.
"Dana White and I spoke earlier today, and I fully understand his decision to put Machida against Jones for the title at UFC 140," Evans said in a statement.
"Given the rehabilitation time I require for my dislocated thumb, I would not be 100-per-cent ready by Dec. 10. The UFC has to keep making fights that entertain the fans. I would have done the same thing as Dana in his position. I'm asking for the fans to support me as I rehabilitate my hand, and I promise I will be back fighting very quickly."
Evans, a former champion, has now missed out on multiple title shots due to injuries the past two years.
After beating Jackson in May 2010, he was supposed to meet champion Rua. But when Rua needed knee surgery, the match was delayed until the spring of 2011. Leading up to that contest, Evans suffered a knee injury, which resulted in Jones taking the title bout and beating Rua.
Evans was expected to meet Jones this summer, but then Jones was sidelined with a hand injury. Evans went on to beat Ortiz, while a returning Jones beat Jackson in September at UFC 135.
Following the Jones win, White confirmed that Evans would finally get his title shot. But with Evans unable to be ready for UFC 140, the president — wanting a blockbuster main event for the return to Toronto, one of the company's best markets — made the decision to go with Machida.
Jones and Evans had been training partners under coach Greg Jackson, and each had long declared they would never fight the other. But hard feelings began earlier this year when Evans took offence to Jones' statement that he would face Evans if a title was on the line, and then when Jones slid in to face Rua for the title.
