We're going to jump back a hundred years, and take a look at a design from 1854 today - although it was a design well ahead of its time. The Treeby chain gun was a percussion rifle that could fire 14 rounds in rapid succession, unlike anything else available at the time. We took a look at one in person:

Unfortunately, I will not be able to fire this one. I don't have regular access to it, and it's just too rare and valuable for the owner to be willing to risk damaging it.

You think Hiram Maxim might have gotten the idea of belt-feed from chain guns like this one.

It's possible, but unlikely. Only two of these were made, and I doubt Maxim would have ever seen them.

If only two of them were made, where is the other one, and how did this one come into your possession? Seems like a one in a million chance to see one of the two of them.

We don't own this ourselves; we saw it in a collection we visited.

For a demonstration model maybe a machinest would be able to reproduce something like that. Kind of like the air rifle used by Lewis and Clark. Just and idea.

All you need is gun-powder, some cloth and a mold to make iron balls.

I wonder if you could adapt this design to fire something like 12G shotshells.

This is incredibly close to the Nerf Vulcan action in principle.
