Hi, I'm Olga Korunsky and I'm a CVS pharmacist. If you are going through menopause, you may have wondered about hormone replacement therapy and exactly what it is. The idea of hormone replacement therapy is to replace the estrogen you lose during perimenopause and menopause, with hormone supplements that can relieve common symptoms such as hot flashes, depression, mood swings, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, and clouded thinking.
If taken for short-term treatment of symptoms, hormone replacement therapy is very safe, with few to no ill effects. However, if taken over a longer period of time, studies have found that hormone replacement therapy can cause increased risk of diseases such as heart disease and may not be beneficial overall. As a consequence, it is not typically recommended for long-term treatment.
There are alternatives to hormone replacement therapy. The simplest is letting the symptoms run their course, because most symptoms will subside over time. However, a healthy lifestyle that consists of not smoking, getting regular exercise, eating a nutritious diet, and making sure you have the right amount of calcium and vitamin D, can lower your risk of bone loss. If lifestyle changes don't seem to be working, there are non-hormonal therapies to treat bladder problems and vaginal dryness, and prescription drugs that can help ward off heart disease and osteoporosis.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of hormone replacement therapy. If you're considering it as a treatment for your menopause symptoms, talk to your doctor or CVS pharmacist. We are here to help.
