Darrell Waltrip in the #88

Actually, Dale had to have surgery right after the last race at Atlanta in order to be ready for Daytona, so he had to skip the race in Japan. Yates asked DW to drive the 88; In Darrell's book he tells the story and talks about how when Yates first mentioned running the 88, he thought it was a full-time ride, then realized that he was a one-race deal.

@TPM75108 To also add some irony, DJ needed filling in at Phoenix during the race because of horrific pain. Who filled in for him? MICHAEL WALTRIP, younger brother of Darrell and future owner of the last car Dale would ever drive in Sprint Cup, the #44 UPS Toyota Camry.

he filled-in for steve park as well. I remember he led a few laps in his car, and in the post-race tears fell off eyes saying he hadnt had a car that good in years.

oh thats cool i did not know that

Well it was actually the very next year.
I never saw the race at Twin Ring Motegi, only the ones at Suzuka. This answers my long time question of whether they raced on the oval or the road course... thanks for posting. Got any other race footage of it?

Why was waltrip driving the #88? Dale Jarrett normally drove that car in 98.

It was an exhibition race in Japan at the end of the season. Alot of drivers didn't want to travel to Japan for a non-points race after the season was already over so they got fill-in drivers to do so.
