Grade School embarks on First Ever Certificate Course in Politics and Governance
Twenty seven Ateneo Grade School grade school teachers took time off to take the first
ever Certificate Course in Politics and Governance from May 11 to May 16, 2009 at Conference room
3/4 at the Social Sciences Building of the Loyola Schools. Offered by the Loyola
Schools Department of Political Science under Ms Anne Candelaria, the certificate course
is a 3 unit graduate elective on the theory and practice of politics in the Philippines.
The certificate course is part of a larger diploma course, the Diploma in Araling
Panlipunan designed by three LS departments: History, Filipino and Political Science to
respond to the faculty development needs of the Ateneo Grade School. The objective of
the program is to provide AGS teachers an opportunity to obtain a diploma while learning
new perspectives in teaching social studies.
The seminar sought to provide a deeper analysis of the fundamental concepts and theories as well as emergent perspectives that frame domestic politics and governance. According to the
course lecturer, Mrs. Anne K. Candelaria, Araling Panlipunan will decide how citizens 20 years from
now will behave. During Aristotle's time, citizenship=virtuousness. At the end of the day, the role of the school is to produce citizens who love their identity. So she exposed teachers to state and non-state actors in the processes and outcomes of politics and they gained a more profound understanding of (1) identity and citizenship in contemporary times, (2) power, authority and governance in the context of democracy and (3) state-society interaction.
Every now and then, they were asked to write a reflection about the lectures and submitted them in
different creative forms, like essay, poem, video and photo essay. The group also listened to guest speakers like Ms. Melai Abao of AKBAYAN Partylist, Mr. Hector Villegas, community organizer, and Mr. Edil Badiri also a lecturer of the Political Science Department who talked about Bangsamoro. Mayor Sonia Lorenzo of San Isidro Nueva Ecija divulged her experiences in being a local government official of an improving municipality. As a final project, the teachers per grade level were tasked to improve the Gawaing Pananaliksik or a text from the textbook based on the following conditions: objectivity of the activity, inclusiveness, sensitivity to political culture and diversity, a more "democratic" definition of government and positive politics.
Teachers continue to train with the Department of Political Science in the first sem
2009, followed by a training in history under the Department of History until the second
semester 2009-10 and finally with the Department of Filipino in summer 2010 until the
first semester 2010.
