UCB Fei Tian Dancers: Water Girls 《水姑娘》
(Movement Showcase @ Zellerbach Playhouse, 12/4/10)

The inspiration for this Miao ethnic dance came from the Huaxi River 花溪河 located on the outskirts of Guiyang City, the capital of Guizhou. "Huaxi" literally means flowers in full bloom and flowing streams. The River water is known to be crystal clear, and the banks are surrounded by over 1000 varieties of flowers, with flowers in bloom year-round.

Just as the River flows calmly as a stream at times, and courses rapidly as a waterfall at times, this dance showcases the dynamics of nature. The Water Girls are part of a river-subsistent culture, literally raised by the water. Harmonious with nature, the culture's ideals center on hard-work, bravery and purity, traits that can be seen in the nature of water and sky.
