Calls for Francisco Franco to be exhumed

A call to move the body of Spain's former dictator Fransisco Franco has sparked anger in the country.

Europe's last fascist ruler, interred in a tomb outside Madrid, continues to be the source of one of the most divisive legacies of a civil war that ended more than 70 years ago.

Families of the more than 33,000 victims say they want Franco's remains removed because it is unacceptable that the man who was ultimately responsible for their death lie alongside their loved ones.

Al Jazeera's Peter Sharp reports from Madrid.

I think General Franco should stay in the Valley of the Fallen. It is an appropriate spot. I hear the left doesn't go to the monument anyway. Would they start attending if Franco were moved?

@LIONED again and again. Study a bit, and document yourself: the valley of the fallen was NOT built by forced prisioners. NO. Most of the people who built it were just common people, a small minority were republican prisioners who were paid for their work (with money or reduction of sentence). And no, very few people died during the construction, very few. Just read documents of the construction or the notes of the architects Diego Mendez and Pedro Muguruza, like I did.

Look people: The Valley of the Fallen was built in order to perpetuate the memory of those who gave their life in the civil war, and also like a reconciliation monument. This was not some mausoleum or pyramid to get Franco buried; he had the grave in the cemetery of El Pardo. The king was the one who decided to move him in there.
