Many people learn how to do this when they're kids. This is a simple way to make a whistle to alert rescue, or scare off predators in the forest.

  • Something I've been trying to put across to other hikers and climbers for years is keeping a whistle around your neck, at all times. In a tumbling fall, like hiking off a trail and down a slope, people often loose their backpack or daypack. If you've broken a limb or hurt your back, as often happens, you need that whistle at hand, not on the sternum strap of your pack or inside it, yards away. I saw this to be the case many times in rescue situations in Wyoming's Tetons. Yours is a good idea.
