The Story of Electronics, releasing Tuesday, NOVEMBER 9, employs the Story of Stuff style to explore the high-tech revolution's collateral damage—25 million tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green 'race to the top' where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable.
Our production partner on the electronics film is the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, which promotes green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry.
And, for all you fact checkers out there,

In the middle of the video my computer restarted because it was installing UPDATES!
And my computers actually come from the dump and 98% of the stuff I get WORKS!
And so I UPDATE them which usually doesn't cost me much on my YouTube channel I will show you how to replace everything in a computer in 11 minutes.
The laptop I'm typing this on is 4 years old yet for $70 I gave it a 750GB WD HDD, Windows 8 and a faster processor which only took about an hour to install and configure!

That's why I love PC! I have had one base model computer my whole life that has held for quite a while, every few years I go to a local electronic recyclers ( a non profit who sell and reuse donated electronics) and upgrade my computer. I haven't thrown added a single circuit to the e-waste crisis.

Another issue is that "green" devices often cost more than competing devices, and in some cases the parts and production costs exceed the highest amount of money to gain from selling the product

While I can agree that design for the dump is a stupid idea, in electronics its not as simple as putting a new part in and having your entire system be upgraded. Its more of a bottleneck issue.
Ex: You buy a computer in 2000, with the best parts available. In 2010 you upgrade the processor, but your computer is still slow. The bottleneck is in anything except the processor, meaning you have to buy more parts to replace the old ones slowing the computer down.
