Recorded January 20, 2004. A true geological hot spot, this national park contains two of the worlds most active volcanoes. Measured from the seafloor, broad Mauna Loa is the tallest mountain on Earth, and Kilauea continues to spew and spit, constantly reforming the landscape around it. Magma vents on the seafloor send lava shooting to the surface, erupting into molten streams that flow straight into the Pacific, forming new land as they cool. On this video I tour the Big Island from a Blue Hawaii helicopter. The video begins at the Hilo International Airport as our helicopter arrives to pick us up. We fly southwest out of Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We fly directly over the Pu`u `O`o vent where there was an impressive lava flow. We continued to fly southeast to where the lava met the sea and then turned around back of the park. After leaving the park we flew over several beautiful waterfalls on our way back to Hilo. The video concludes with landing back at the Hilo International Airport.
