@Hooliganza and yet it won a Hugo

This should not be labeled as science-fiction...

I just finished the novel and I didn’t like it very much. I agree that he really should have gone into the alternate history more.
I felt like he wanted “The Grasshopper Lies Heavy” to be the main focus of the story which would bring all the characters together but maybe he didn’t know do so. As for the ending if he really was trying to make a “reality isn’t what it seems to be” point then he did it much better in Ubik.

when I finished the book.. I thought the ending was underwhelming, but other than that, it was a good read. Didn't amaze me too much

I tottaly agree if your point. This book is over rated. I feel exactly the same when the book finished.

Franks work saved Chilldan's soul too when Paul the young Japanese business man offers to help him turn franks work out en masse as cheap trinkets and Robert realizes how cynical and barbaric it is to just accept it for money. Cool uploads btw nice to know someone else reads :) subbed.

I loved this book personally. I think Frank Frinks roll was that of the "artist" who after staring death in the face was suddenly released to still live. Frank was happy or even determined to churn out his art, piece by piece after that as the book says. A kinda of blind faith in his art to have some kind light in the ubiquitous and total darkness. And Franks blind faith is realized, though Tagomi who ponders franks work and in return unwittingly saves frank : ) great book imo.
Edit that. I think Frank represents the artist or the artists rolli in this situation. But rather than having faith in his art or believing it it, its rather simply something to keep him busy, at work so he can live. Having faced death he realized how important just living was. But then added to that it still shows through tagomi that in and of itself art is transcendent, redemptive, and life saving. But anyway you said you didnt see a roll for frank and I saw him as the Artist.

@SuperTrancend That's actually a really good point. I never thought of him as an artist, I thought he was just trying to find work. Maybe I should have paid better attention to the scenes of the jewelry making and I might have understood better. Thanks for pointing that out, it actually makes me look at the book as more of an allegory and not an action story/
