The destruction of coral reefs, trawling and the use of seahorses in Chinese medicine is leading to their decline. How do we stop this near-mythical sea creature from becoming extinct? Wired interviews Academy researcher, Healy Hamilton to discuss this unique fish and the dangers that threaten them.

  • @feenixrising10 Oh duh.

  • @vysehrad - the 'Steve Irwin' is also the name of the ship that is used to fight the Whale Wars against the Japanese. It was named in honor of Steve Irwin, the croc guy. You can see the ship and the show on Animal Planet on TV. The Whale Wars team hav a new ship this yr. called the 'Bob Barker' obtained with a $5 million donation from the former Price is Right emcee.

  • @feenixrising10 You mean Steve Irwin, 1962-2006?

  • From whales to seahorses - 'Seahorse Wars' next job for the Steve Irwin?

  • My mouse pad has a picture of a sea dragon on it (the second animal shown in the video). It would be a pity to lose such strange creatures. *Sigh* Quackery leading to extinctions... not very surprising.

Enforcement is definitely a large problem. The best way to help them is first to leave them alone and stop harvesting them, then to educate people about the sea horse's place and role in nature.
