No. Not according to scientific classification. They are a fungus. Fungi are have no seeds. They reproduce via spores.

Of course to cooks they are.

Technically Banana's are a grass by classification...and tomatoes are a fruit.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,

A tale of a fateful trip

That started from this tropic port

    Aboard this tiny ship.

If you read very deeply into the story arc... you can make the case that they are not exactly monsters, but almost acting in the best interest of the castaways. Their argument goes something like this: You can join us & survive (Albeit in a mushroomized state) or starve & die. And we won't let you die! There is at leats a hint of altruizim there. At the very least, more than (Spoiler alert!) when the sole survivor is rescued & brought home & they dump him in a terminal ward!

Creepy, haunting, film. The shroud of death hangs over it. Stuffy film critics, who belittled and wrote this film off were puzzled by & laughed at it's dread fixation on mushrooms. 'A gothic horror movie about mushrooms? Whats so scary about mushrooms' They complained.

But I think the mushroom creatures might've been intended to resemble & be symbolic of the mushroom clouds of the H bombs that were tested in the Pacific. The gloomy island was saturated with radioactive fallout from those tests.
