From their 1984 album The Big Express

Lyrics:

You put your cleanest dirty shirt on
Then you stagger down to meet the dawn
You take a ride upon a bus, it's just a fuss
You know it keeps you born
You get to know a morning face
You get to join the human race
You get to know the world
Has passed you by

Who cares? You might be dead
Who cares? You stayed in bed
Who cares? You wrote the note
Who cares? You might have spoke

Wake up!

You take a snack to fill the gap
And then you're ready for another shift
Your attention was diverted
By the girl who smiled and made the lift
The radio is blaring out
It's in one ear and then it's out
You didn't notice that the record's over

Who cares? You might be dead
Who cares? You stayed in bed
Who cares? You wrote the note
Who cares? You might have spoke

Wake up!

In the road a crowd had gathered
And a man was close to dead
The blood is running down the gutter
While you're yawning, nothing's said
His body's wriggling like an eel
They got no sense, no touch, no feel
Somebody better go and get a blanket

Who cares? You might be dead
Who cares? You stayed in bed
Who cares? You wrote the note
Who cares? You might have spoke

Who cares?

  • Why this band is'nt in the conversation as one of the greatest of all time is a crime.

  • @dougcash1 i think the fact they are not means that they are. If you get my drift. Commercial success informs most people's idea of what is good in art. Thankfully sites like Youtube have given people like us a forum to show our appreciation of proper music. The backlash against Cowell and his seedy coterie of corrupting perverts and sychophants starts here!

  • fix the fucking audio ffs, the intro is the best part,

  • Fuck Virgin records for what they did to XTC and how they were treated.

  • shame about the small audio problems

  • @JavelBleach I agree. this shit is just too good not to be appreciated.

  • I can only think that, like the likes of Shakespeare & Van Gogh, they will only be fully appreciated after their death by future generations, when the Beatles have been long forgotten.

  • I'm with you dougcash1- I sort of view these guys as the Beatles liberated from all the commercialism that surrounded the Beatles. Art for the sake of art. And the end result- truly inspired and inspiring music. Their music is like water for a thirsty soul.

  • @dougcash1 XTC is not in the conversation as one of the best bands ever because they are musicians' musicians.... only those who truly "get it" about music can even hear how wonderful these guys are.... they pave the way for the bands who make commercial success... but these guys are beyond that... XTC is pure MAGIC... to quote van morrison "music ... is spiritual... the music business... is not" they are my favorite band ever... cant say enough good about them...

  • this song is one of the reasons i love xtc. it is a shame what the record company did to this band.
