Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney.Upon graduation from high school in 1976, Keith Haring enrolled in the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh, a commerical arts school. He soon realized that he had little interest in becoming a commerical graphic artist and, after two semesters, dropped out. While in Pittsburgh, Keith Haring continued to study and work on his own and in 1978 had a solo exhibition of his work at the Pittsburgh Arts and Crafts Center.Later that same year, Keith Haring moved to New York City and enrolled in the School of Visual Arts (SVA). In New York, Haring found a thriving alternative art community that was developing outside the gallery and museum system, in the downtown streets, the subways and spaces in clubs and former dance halls. Here he became friends with fellow artists Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as the musicians, performance artists and graffiti writers that comprised the burgeoning art community. Keith Haring was swept up in the energy and spirit of this scene and began to organize and participate in exhibitions and perfirmances at Club 54 and other alternative venues. In addition to being impressed by the innovation and energy of his contemporaries, Keith Haring was also inspired by the work of Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky, William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and Robert Henri's manifesto The Art Spirit, which assert the fundamental independence of the artist. With these influences Keith Haring was able to push his own youthful impulse toward a singular kind of graphic expression based on the primancy of the line. Also drawn to the public and participatory nature of Christo's work, in particular Running Fence, and by Andy Warhol's unique fusion of art and life, Keith Haring was determined to devote his career to creating a truly public art. As a student at SVA, Keith Haring experimented with performance, video, installation and collage, while always maintaining a strong commitment to drawing. In 1980, Keith Haring found a highly effective medium that allowed him to communicate with the wider audience he desired, when he noticed the unused advertisting panels covered with matte black paper in a subway station. He began to create drawings in white chalk upon these blank paper panels throught the subway system, Between 1980 and 1985, Keith Haring produced hundreds of these public drawings in rapid rhythmic lines, sometimes creating as many as forty "subway drawings" in one day. This seamless flow of images became familiar to New York commuters, who often would stop to engage the artist when they encountered him at work. The subway became, as Keith Haring said, a "laboratory" for working out his ideas and experimenting with his simple lines.Between 1980 and 1985, Keith Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. His first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Westbeth Painters Space in 1981. In 1982, he made his Soho gallery debut with an immensely popular and highly acclaimed one-man exhibition at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery. During this period, he also participated in renowned international survey exhibitions such as Documenta 7 in Kassel; the Sao Paulo Biennial; and the Whitney Biennial. Keith Haring completed numerous public projects in the first half of the 80's as well, ranging from an animation for the Spectacolor

  • Never see you full women shape just pregnant women. I think that he was genius and he had a big power. He knows his illness is fatal and he work and work and work. How many people can do that? I love the Pop Shop idea. When I made this video I was so lonley and that time I was an exibition from Keith. I try expressed the rights for the homosexual people the full life. In my country people more than half "don't likes" the homosexual people and that thing I'm not agree.

  • I don't think so that I manipulated Keith Haring's work. I'm liberal, and realy love the pop art and pop culture since 1990, I saw one Rollings Stones lips (design by Andy Warhol I was 6 years old). Keith Haring likes Mickey Mouse because Mickey the pop culture in his symbols system. Andy Warhol and Keith Haring was friends and Andy helped to him. If somebody know how was Keith certainly knows he was homosexual.

  • This heartfelt footage of Keith Haring's work is the signature vidio of my channel

  • Thx, the comment, but everybody can see here!:D

  • Admittedly, a couple images are explicit. However, I'm not sure we need to shelter our children to the point of denial about worldly things. Also, each image is only lasting a second. I had to stop the video and back it up to even get an idea of what the image was showing. Sorry, I just don't think any child will be scarred for life from it.

  • Seriously people??? This is NOT smut nor inappropriate and very indicative of a messed up society that wants to say this is "gross". One cannot even tell that the images are sexually, unless you are speed viewing so in tune as to even identify it as same sex or masturbation unless you have a graphic real memory already and have been exposed to the real thing first. Give the teacher a break from YOUR, "indecent proposal".

  • take this out it made a goooooooooooooooooooooood art teacher not have her job now and polajise to her her name is somthing marsh its not somthing im at this school i idmit i am a THIRD GRADER and to strait this out once she going to do love words byt not lover words just words

  • true genious

  • 1) Knowing these inappropriate images existed before showing the video to her class means it was grounds for being terminated...no investigation necessary, no need for a paid leave. 2) I went to Wright Elementary 20 years ago and had vigilant, diligent parents that actually cared about what was 'fed' to me at this age. 20 years ago this teacher's career would be over. It's definitely a different age, which is why my children will not be educated by the government...

  • Trivial. Should not be shown to a 4th grade class. Let kids be kids...

Educate not indoctrinate. Had talent - too bad it is unattractive. Nothing is as beautiful as Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Da Vinci -- real artists, with surreal talent.

  • where did ohhhdeceiver go to school? Seriously? I have never heard of any sex ed. in fourth grade. And I CERTAINLY am sure ANY sex ed. in schools does not include a drawing of two gay men masturbating each other. That is not even remotely sex ed.

This lady is an art teacher, those kids are fourth grade, give them some paper and crayons.

  • @ExploringTheatre True enough... I guess I should have said "could be perceived as explicit".

  • @Suzikay1 not even sure how "explicit" a crudely drawn phallis is.... I mean really...

  • It's more a case of parents uncomfortable with - or unwilling to - explain the world to their children. Which, with all the attendant stereotypical ignorance, perpetuates problem thinking.
