Baybayin is the name of the former Filipino writing system. It comes from the word baybáy which means spelling. According to David Diringer, the renowned expert on ancient scripts, the baybayin possibly came directly from the ancient Kavi script of Java, Indonesia. Or, it may have its roots in Kavi but was introduced to the Philippines by way of the ancient script used by the Buginese people of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Another name for the Baybayin is Alibata. This term was just invented in 1914 by Dean Paul Versoza of the University of Manila. it comes form alif, ba and t a, the first letters in the Arabic dialect of Maguindanao. Versoza did not explain why he chose that particular language; it has absolutely no relationship to the baybayin.

  • Let me correct ALIBATA is not the right term, the correct term is BAYBAYIN. Alibata term was derived from the Arabic Alphabet.

    Can somebody explain this??

  • can anyone help me write something in babiyan?

  • I don't believe this that tagalog is the old language it's a big lol,you can't even feel about their behavior it's full of drama tagalog is made by old old filipiono from VisMin,ilocano chinise, javanese & spanish... It means their is no originality of tagalog..., that's why we call it now filipino cause it is a collective words from every island of the Philippines...

  • @jaysonvillaruz

    where can you learn it?

  • ,go for Baybayin today,..lots of Filipino/Luvano/Maharlikas learning the script,...

  • @pearlqf

    I see your point.

What I believe is that the Baybayin Writings was originated as early as Sanskrit of India during the Brahmic Culture more or less 5000 years ago and that period there was no influence yet of Arabic culture in the philippines.

Up-to-date there are scripts and sound of Indian writing, the same as baybayin which are also originated from the Sankrit.

Our Baybayin is a family of Brahmic Scripts, Arabic influence just came lately.

  • @RDMofDAVAO

Baybayin is derived from baybay, shore? Why do we need to be Arabo-phobic when that was how the scripts were transmitted and learned by our people? Because baybayin is tagalog, it now becomes the correct term? Why not sulat, sudat, surat, kudlit, kudlitan, kurdit, kurditan, pamagkudlit, kirim, etc? Panalo na ang salitang tagalog sa buong bansa, pero dapat namang ibigay ang dapat sa nararapat at huwag namang angkinin lahat! Hegemonyang tagalog ang nakakasira sa pagkakaisa.

  • According to the University of Oxford July 2010 Report The Philippines has a Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Headcount of 11.2 Million out of a population of 88.7 Million. Culled from the 2003 Data, these figures show about 12.6% of our population is in poverty. It's about the same proportion as China. Since 2003, our economy has steadily grown for 5 consecutive years except 2009 when there was a world recession. Using 2010 Data, the poverty ratio would even be much lower than we know.
