Providing cool cheap salvaged stuff is a minor component of what The Depot does for the community. The visionaries, inventors, educators, and artists who scour the offerings regularly also converse here and are inspired here.
The Depot is about transformation and conservation.
Artist Robert McDaniel supplies his studio exclusively with goods that have been diverted from landfill, purchased here. The images he creates have a latent message about the power of transformation and seeing old things in new ways. His images are seen globally, online, on book covers, and in galleries; spreading this vital message: REUSE! The Depot is a vital community provider, employing a diverse group of people committed to environmental education, and creative thinking.


The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is an ecological treasure trove of art & craft materials, educational supplies, vintage furniture, home décor, paper goods, fabric, and much more. Founded in 1979 by two Oakland public school teachers, the Depot promotes solid waste diversion and resource conservation through the Depot store and environmental education programs

The mission of the East Bay Depot is to divert waste materials from landfills by collecting and redistributing discarded goods as low-cost supplies for art, education, and social services in our Depot Store. The educational mission is to increase the awareness of school children and the general public regarding the green benefits of reusing materials.

The East Bay Depot is a California non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
