Gen. Colin Powell talks about the Henry Louis Gates arrest with Larry King. He said the story "went viral" when President Obama commented on the story. Also, Powell thinks that America "isn't quite post-racial" at this time. "These problems still exist in post-racial America." However, he suggested that Gates should not have argued with the policeman arresting him. "You don't argue with a police officer," he says.

Powell also called the arresting cop, Sergeant James Crowley, "an outstanding police officer."

Also, at 5:10, Powell admits he's been profiled "many times" as a national security advisor.

  • @Kataanmonster He said he didn't know what was said in the altercation.

  • I would love to know how someone can tell what a police officer is thinking. That is the only way to know if you're being "profiled". Colin Powell is a brilliant man, but I feel that he is completely wrong on that point. He fails to mention that the police were leaving and Dr. Gates followed them outside screaming racially charged profanities at them in front of the neighbors. He shoud have gone to jail.

  • I had the honor of speaking with Gen. Powell many years ago when he was still head of the Joint Chiefs and I asked him if he would ever run for pres. and he said he would never run b/c of personal reasons and I like most people, have the utmost respect for him.

  • Race is a part of life. When he says post racial what does he mean? its a fact there are many races here.

  • Put yourself in Gates shoes for a moment. You arrive home from a trip to China to find your front door jammed, you're tired, you can't get the door open, the police show up and question your right to be entering your own home. You'd probably be indignant too.

I'm not defending Gates' charge of racism, in fact, I don't think race really had much to do with it and I fail to see how Affirmative Action is even relevant to the conversation as anything but inflammatory reverse racism.

  • Colin Powell is the only former member of the Bush cabinet I have any respect for.

  • Engage your gear before you open your mouth. The police officer was doing his job but the arrognant professor thought he had friends in high places. His animosity is very obvious,a product ,probably, of affirmative action which allowed him to jump the que without taking along his brains. The officer was responding to a call and no way had any racist bias, except to protect the professor.

  • YES HE WAS beaten bc he was black- and if he wasn't beaten bc he was black the officers would NOT have been punished for their actions- they were found GUILTY - no one left anything out of that tape..
