From 1986 here is a clip, that I wish I had more of (anyone out there have it?!) because this was the first Sam Kinison interview on the Steve & Garry show. (Steve and Sam would be friends and party together for a number of years afterwards.) I only have about six minutes of this (including Sam's infamous and awesome "Love Song" from "Louder Than Hell") featuring phone calls from fans, and even "Paul" Sam (or "Satan" Sam) using the vocalizer. The deep voice (or high) machine called a vocalizer was initally used for commercial-type work, Steve Dahl was the first to use it as a comedy bit and for characters. It's one of those over-imitated bits that I've heard on so many shows over the years, usually as Satan (Johnny B, Howard Stern, etc.) that people just take it for granted for having always been available in the studio when it wasn't commonly used. Just another aspect of modern comedy radio that people take for granted, but that probably never would have existed in its present form without Steve Dahl, much like most of comedy talk radio!

That's awesome, I remember dialing fast and furiously and being disappointed!

I will check if I have it. I was the second caller on this clip.
