Japan's finest exponents of Butoh dance, Sankai Juku, weave meticulous, spellbinding movement with breathtaking, large-scale staging in a theatrical experience quite unlike any other.
The piece shown here was performaed at Sadler's Wells in November 2008.
@sealpony totally agree!! butoh dance is an street art, expresive free art! Sankai Juku just is a lucrative art, Good art but lucrative only for the people can pay an entrace to the theater.

Sankai Juku is not Butoh. They have taken the the superficial aesthetic of butoh, (shaved head, rice paste, distorted arm and cervical spine posture,)and repeated that for commercial gain. So then people with money can go see them at a festival, not be challenged to think or alter their perception in any , and afterwards have a drink and talk about how beautiful the work was and feel they have absorbed some "authentic culture. If you want to see butoh look at some videos of Hijikata or Ohno
