"The Safety Dance" was the biggest-selling single by the 1980s synth pop group Men Without Hats, written by frontman Ivan Doroschuk. Released in the United States in 1982 and in the United Kingdom in September 1983, the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on Cash Box. In the United Kingdom the song also proved successful, reaching number six. It was actually released three times before sparking an interest on radio play. The song would prove to be the only major international hit for the group. Their follow-up album, Folk of the 80's (Part III), reached no higher than #127 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart.

The music video for the song is notable for its medieval imagery. It was filmed in the village of West Kington, near Bath, in south-west England. Ivan Doroschuk is the only member of the band to actually perform in the video; the other band members can be seen standing in the entry to one of the buildings in the town square. The dwarf in the video has been identified as actor Mike Edmonds. The Morris Dance side performing in the video was Chippenham Town Morris from Wiltshire.

*Note: If you are a Record Company employee or artist(s) themselves who object(s) to this commercially unavailable video footage being promoted on YouTube (albeit in a lossy mono audio format) then please contact us to have it removed before flagging it. At the same time you may also like to explain to the fans why they cannot access this classic material in a decent quality digital format anywhere else?

"You won't make a profit on something that cannot be purchased but enough exposure may well help sell what you actually do have for sale. Meanwhile to share ones talents is the greatest of gifts!"

Please also be aware that all videos uploaded to YouTube are format shifted by the host website from the original files. This can often cause picture & sound deterioration (i.e. mono audio) as well as the occasional video/audio synchronization issue. The files are also deliberately layered on our end with logos and artists links in order to prevent YouTube recycling by lazy up-loaders, while at the same time helping to promote the artists themselves!

  • We can dance, we can dance, everybody look at your pants!

  • @Omega7adam Especially at election time.

  • @tramberly I mean if you say its worse but thats just a matter of opinion..but alot of people think that its fact that the 80s was better....I say give all music a chance before giving the stigma of all music today is horrible..I think its not fair that music today gets a bad rep for a few bad apples...I mean like rap music..not all is "souljaboy rap" but people say all rap is crap. Or how much people downplay pop music and pop culture...Its a new day..new time..no disrespect to the past at all

  • @17dioneforyou Also, not all of us laud music just because it was the time period in which we grew up. I wasn't alive in the 60s, but I think it is better music than today's music. I wasn't alive to experience the Beatles at their peak, but I think they are better than many bands that I did grow up with.

  • @17dioneforyou Music from the 60s, 70s, 80s = the best. I don't think today's music is horrible, just comparatively worse. Also, speaking as a person who grew up in the 80s, I don't think everything about today's generation is worse. I think t.v. is better now than in the past. Of course, a lot of shows from the 80s have sentimental value to me, but I think today's t.v. is cooler/more clever/better. But music? The past has the edge.

  • @wings744 agreed

  • @17dioneforyou - I hear ya! Love music from every genre & every generation, it makes you a more interesting person or at the very least keeps the neighbors scratching thier heads when they 'don't get what you're into'. + its hugely funny to read all the comments from the 80's genners who were blowing off all the people who grew up in the 70's when they'd bash that gen's music, now they're starting to sound like the fogeys, themselves;)

  • Well, people who say today's music is crap only watch bad tv and listen to bad radio stations witch only play what major recording companies want we listen to and buy... If these people stop being so lazy and start researching and listening to "non-mainstream" stuff, I am absolutely sure they will change their minds.

  • why is it everytime i come watch a video from the early days people are saying the same thing "better than the crap today"?? its not crap just because its not your style..you grew up in the 80s..stop crying cause hair metal and the saftey dance are not popular..im 20 i respect all genres of music and all times.......im sure stuff that came out in the 80s werent all winners..stop making the 80s out to be so awesome...its over..move on or at least respect my generation

  • One person isnt a friend of mine.
